In 1971 he also recorded for Bunny lee: Ripe Cherry and Guns Don’t Argue.
Alcapone
became Jamaican’s most popular DJ. He was always in high demand and recorded
over 100 singles and many albums, working also with producers Coxsone
Dodd, Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs and Prince Buster.
During that time Alcapone, who was by now extremely popular with his highly original style that included high- pitch whoops and the famous imitation of crowing cockerels, won the cup presented to the best DJ by Swing magazine in Jamaica. Since then he has recorded for Sidney Crooks, Bunny Lee and Count Shelly and continues to successfully appear live worldwide. In the year 2000 he recorded on the Italian label Satta Records, including 2 versions over Max Romeo’s acoustic rhythms, also recorded on the same label. Alcapone remains the classical Jamaican DJ, transforming and adding a new vibe to any rhythm he chooses, in the great toasting tradition pioneered in the Jamaican dancehalls. |
